More than half of the 16 years we were married revolved around fishing. Jim ran the business out of our garage in Mattawan for 11 years and Cindy would help dip, wrap, and purchase rods, or anything else Jim needed a hand with. We moved to a location out of the city where Jim was able to build a shop specifically for the rod business.

Now, after Jim passed away, I am running the business solo and enjoying getting to know the clientele and building the rods. There is a sense of satisfaction that comes with providing a product for those who appreciate it.

Using the training I received from Jim and knowing the love he had for fishing as well as how much I enjoyed that time with him, I believe this is what Jim would like. I like knowing that I can keep the J. Higley name as a trademark on a well made rod for the sports enthusiast who will appreciate it.

J. Higley Custom Rods offers all kinds of rods, including Casting and Spinning rods for bass or pan fishing, Steelhead rods, Fly rods and ice fishing rods. Prices range from about $20 (ice rods) to $200.

Customers can have their rod customized with their names on it, in any color they like, and it takes about 1-2 weeks, depending on design, to build it from start to finish. The casting rods have a blank exposed trigger reel set, for added sensitivity.

Our mission is to "Produce the best rod at the lowest cost" to make it affordable for anyone.

I really enjoy the rods and the hearing how they have been used, I know many of you join me in saying "thanks Jim for all the good memories and good fishing".
